The Machame route begins at Machame Gate, located at 5,400 feet high on Kilimanjaro’s lower southern slope. The route travels north, first up to Machame Hut and then to the Shira Plateau. Next, the trail turns east across the plateau to Lava Tower before traversing the mountain to Barranco, Karanga and Barafu. The summit bid starts from Barafu and ends at Uhuru Peak at 19,340 feet above sea level.
The descent route is on a different path which proceeds south from Barafu to the Mweka gate.
The Machame route can be done in 6 or 7 days. Both of these variations are popular, however the 7 day route is always recommended. The 7 day route has a higher success rate due to the extra day of acclimatization. Therefore, we strongly recommend doing the 7 day Machame route over the 6 day version.
We offer the 7 day Machame route as a group climb or private climb. The 6 day Machame route is offered as a private climb only.
